Our barcodes continue to be widely accepted across India, and most customers list and sell their products without any issues. They work smoothly on major online and quick-commerce platforms such as Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket, JioMart, Amazon, and many more.
To help new customers build confidence, we’ve also compiled real examples of brands using our barcodes along with links to their live product listings: See brands using our barcodes
Retailers With Known Restrictions in India:
(We believe in keeping this page transparent and up-to-date so you can make informed decisions)
Please click on the countries with restrictions to see exactly what these are.
Dmart generally insists on GS1-issued barcodes for new suppliers. However, if DMart is strongly interested in your product, they can assign their own internal barcode and still accept your items.
This depends entirely on the buyer/category team and is handled case-by-case. If DMart is part of your plan, please confirm their current requirement before purchasing barcodes.
Many products listed on JioMart and in Reliance stores use reseller barcodes, and several of our customers continue to sell there without problems. You can also find many products with reseller numbers on their online platform JioMart.
For example: Perfora | Waypham | Habbits | Kamadhenu | Wellness Surgical
We did receive an isolated report where one outlet initially asked for GS1 barcodes, but the customer eventually got approval after clarification. Since acceptance can vary by outlet, category, or buyer, we recommend checking with your specific Reliance/JioMart contact before purchasing barcodes if you plan to sell through them.
Amazon India accepts our barcodes for most regular product listings. Thousands of private-label sellers use reseller barcodes with no issues as long as the barcode is unique, the product is new to Amazon’s catalogue, and the category does not require brand-level verification.
For example: Perfora | Curryit | Wilful | Born Good | Habbits
However, if you plan to enroll your brand in Amazon’s Brand Registry Program, Amazon requires GS1 barcodes. Listings created with reseller barcodes may face issues during verification, and Amazon may request a GS1 certificate issued in your brand’s name.
If Brand Registry is your goal, you must purchase GS1 barcodes.
If your product category is eligible, Amazon allows you to apply for a GTIN/Barcode Exemption, which lets you list products without any barcode at all.
This is helpful when: You want Brand Registry benefits but don’t want GS1 cost; your category commonly receives exemptions; or you sell handmade, custom, or private-label items.
Approval depends on the product category and supporting documents.
International Barcode Restrictions:
A few countries and certain retailers outside India have restrictions on the type of barcodes they accept. If you plan to export your products, please review the list of countries with known barcode limitations to ensure your products meet the requirements of your target market.
Shoprite in Africa has some restrictions, and seems to be forcing their suppliers to join GS1. If you plan to sell your products in Shoprite/Checkers/Usave/OK Furniture/House & Home, please talk to them before purchasing barcode numbers – they might force you to join GS1, which is unfortunately very expensive for you and for the retail customer.
(NOTE – if Shoprite aren’t going to accept your goods anyway, it is a waste of money to join GS1 – so find out if Shoprite are keen to stock your goods BEFORE you risk joining GS1)
Costco, Walmart, Home Depot and some EDI systems require suppliers to have GS1 membership.
We get various reports of restrictions by distributors in China, So if you plan on selling in China, talk to your distributors to establish if they have any problems with alternative barcode retailer numbers.
Check with Allegro – there seems to be a new (2024) policy that forces their suppliers to obtain barcodes directly from GS1.
