Barcode registration is a free service that we offer to generally increase the internet profile of your product.
Our EAN-13 and UPC barcodes come with FREE barcode registration on International Barcodes Database and also on IBNREG (International Barcodes Network Registry). This allows you to register your product and/or company details alongside the barcode number in an online database, which auto-feeds this information to other online databases.
This service is completely optional and is not required for any barcode numbers as there is no central database for barcodes, however, there are several advantages to registering your barcodes online.
- Barcode registration helps with cell phone app scanners so that when the product barcode is scanned the product information will appear.
- Registration will increase the internet profile of the product so that when the barcode is searched for on Google or another search engine the product information will appear.
- If a barcode is registered on internet databases, it can dissuade people from using the barcode number illegally on sites like Amazon. If a quick internet search tells the person that that barcode number is in use they will be much less likely to use the barcode. While people cannot legally use legitimately sold barcode numbers, if they are being used illegally it is an extra hassle for the legal owner of the barcode number to follow this up. This can be easily avoided with registration.
- It also makes it easier for retailers and customers to find your company & product information through searching online for the barcode number, or with a barcode scanning app. And it also helps those few reluctant retailers who still think GS1’s database has all the answers – you can point them to this independent database where your barcodes are registered, as proof that they are yours, and are valid and legitimate – this can save a lot of wasted time and unnecessary frustration with some retailers.
It is easy to copy a barcode – anyone can see a barcode number and then duplicate that barcode on a different product. Our registration helps protect you against illegal use of your barcode numbers, and helps retailers and customers find the details of your product and business.
How to register your barcode numbers:
After you purchase barcodes from us, the barcodes will be emailed to you. Registration instructions will be included in the email. You can then register your barcode numbers and product/company details on the International Barcodes Database https://barcodesdatabase.org/ (your company name and barcode numbers will be automatically registered already on the IBNREG.org database). Barcode registration on the International Barcodes Database is optional. However, it will increase the profile of your product on the internet.
After you register your barcode number and product details on the International Barcodes Database, then your product details will be displayed when customers search for your barcode number in online search engines (e.g. Google) or on some smart-phone apps (e.g. the Zebra app). Please note that some smart-phone barcode apps only search in online stores such as Amazon.com (they don’t search in the online barcode databases). This means that their database of barcode numbers/product details are very limited. The best smartphone barcode app’s (e.g. the Zebra app) search in Amazon and other online storesas well asthe main online barcode/product databases.
